What a consultation costs

What each option publishes.

A first conversation with someone who can tell you where you stand. Jamaican firms rarely publish a fee; the ones that do are quoted here.

Live figure

Pocket Attorney

US$20–25

per 15-minute block, charged in USD

Each vetted attorney sets their own fee. You see it on screen before you request the call, and you pay only for the blocks you use. Thirty minutes at today's fees: US$40–50.

Live figure: the fee range across approved attorneys on the platform right now.

Walk-in law office

JM$15,000–60,000

plus GCT, for a one-hour paid consultation

Kingston firms that publish a consultation fee quote between JM$15,000 and JM$60,000 plus GCT for the first hour, with anything over an hour billed on top. Most firms publish no fee at all. 1, 2, 3

A few firms offer a free first 15–30 minutes: 3 of 100 Jamaican firms on one directory.

Foreign online legal sites

US$34.99–65 a month

membership, plus US$149 for a 30-minute session

Rocket Lawyer charges US$34.99 a month or US$149 a year, with a 30-minute Legal Advice Session at US$149. JustAnswer charges US$65 a month per category plus a US$5 join fee. Their attorneys are licensed in the United States and the United Kingdom, not Jamaica. 9, 10, 11, 12

LegalZoom's attorney plan covers "all 50 states"; none of the three lists Jamaica.

General AI chatbot

Free

or a monthly subscription; no attorney

ChatGPT and Gemini will answer a legal question, and both companies say not to rely on the answer. OpenAI's terms say output "may not always be accurate" and is not "a substitute for professional advice"; Google says "Don't rely on responses from Gemini Apps as ... legal ... advice." 13, 14

No Jamaican attorney, no Jamaican-law source set, no one to call when the answer is wrong.

Legal Aid Council

Free, or JM$500–1,000

means-tested contribution

A real option if you qualify. The Council assigns panel attorneys for criminal matters; for divorce, land, probate and employment it provides advice rather than representation. Around 900 attorneys are on its panel, with weekday office hours. 15, 16, 17, 18

No published waiting time to be assigned an attorney.

What a divorce costs

An uncontested divorce in Jamaica, in published figures.

Divorce is the matter people bring to Pocket Attorney most, so it is the worked example. The figures are what Jamaican firms and guides publish; your own matter may differ.

Attorney's fee, uncontested divorce

JM$120,000–150,000typical; up to JM$200,000–300,000 at larger firms

Four Jamaican sources put professional fees for an uncontested divorce at a starting point of about JM$120,000, with larger firms quoting up to JM$200,000 and one 2026 guide giving a JM$120,000–300,000 band. 2, 4, 5, 6

Government stamp duty on the petition

JM$5,000paid at the Stamp Office, Tax Administration Jamaica

A flat JM$5,000 per document since the 2019 stamp duty reform, confirmed by two Jamaican firms. Process-serving and other disbursements are extra. 4, 7, 8

Time to decree absolute

6–12 monthsfrom filing, depending on court backlog

Five sources give six to twelve months for an uncontested divorce; one firm puts the average at nine. A contested divorce costs more and can run for years, and no Jamaican source publishes a figure for it. 4, 6, 7, 2

Preparing in Pocket Attorney

100 tokensunlocks the divorce procedure for 30 days; the petition draft is 5 tokens; library documents are free

The "How to start divorce proceedings" procedure, the petition prepared from your answers, and the supporting affidavits and decree forms in the library. Then review it with a divorce attorney by video at US$20–25 per 15 minutes.

  • Pocket Attorney does not file your divorce or represent you in court.
  • The attorney you meet on Counsel Now may take your matter on, at their own fee.
  • Tokens: US$19.99 buys 140; see What it costs.

A contested divorce costs more and can run for years; no Jamaican source publishes a figure for it. Disbursements such as process serving are extra on every route.

How long until you are talking to an attorney

The steps between you and a conversation.

What each route asks of you before an attorney is on the line, and what each one publishes about its own speed. Where no one publishes a figure, we say so.

Pocket Attorney

  1. Open the app and pick the category: police stop, divorce, land, accident, domestic violence, or general.
  2. See the attorney's fee per 15-minute block and request the call. Any hour. No appointment, no travel.
  3. An available attorney accepts and you join by video from your phone. If no one in your category is free, the waiting area holds your request.
  4. Billed per block; end the call when you have what you need.

Depends on attorney availability There are no office hours and no appointment book. Attorneys are independent, so we do not publish a connect-time figure yet; we will when there is enough consultation volume to report one honestly.

Walk-in law office

  1. Call or email during office hours, typically Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30.
  2. The firm assigns an attorney and confirms a consultation. One Kingston firm publishes "within two business days"; most publish nothing.
  3. Travel to the office at the appointed time.
  4. A one-hour paid consultation, billed in advance or on the day.

Days, during business hours For context, a 2024 study of 500 US law firms found only a third answered an email enquiry and 40% answered the phone. No equivalent Jamaican survey exists. 1, 19

Foreign online legal sites

  1. Join: a monthly or annual membership, or a one-time join fee.
  2. Submit a written question, or book a call slot.
  3. Rocket Lawyer: "a written response within 1 business day." JustAnswer: "average initial response time is 6 minutes", and "as long as 24 hours during busy times."
  4. The answer comes from a US- or UK-licensed attorney, applied to Jamaican law at your own risk.

Minutes to a business day Fast, from a lawyer who is not licensed in Jamaica. Neither site lists a Jamaica category. 9, 10, 11

Legal Aid Council

  1. Visit a Legal Aid office or clinic during weekday hours.
  2. Means test: income and expenses are assessed; a contribution of JM$500–1,000 may be asked.
  3. Criminal matter: a panel attorney is assigned. Divorce, land, employment: advice at a clinic.

No published waiting time The Council notes under-served rural areas where panel attorneys are scarce. 16, 17, 18
